Jeffrey P. Somers , Lead Independent Trustee

Mr. Somers has been an SNH trustee since 2009. Mr. Somers is chair of the Board's Compensation Committee. Mr. Somers also serves on the Boards of Government Properties Income Trust, Select Income REIT and the RMR Funds. Mr. Somers is Of Counsel with the law firm of Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton, PC, of Waltham, MA, where he previously served as managing member for a number of years. He held the same role at his prior law firm and began his legal career as a staff attorney at the SEC.

John L. Harrington , Independent Trustee

Mr. Harrington has been an SNH trustee since 1999. Mr. Harrington is Chairman of the Board's Audit Committee. Mr. Harrington also serves on the Boards of Hospitality Properties Trust, Government Properties Income Trust and the RMR Funds. Mr. Harrington was the CEO of the Boston Red Sox Baseball Club until 2002, and is currently the Executive Director and Chairman of the Yawkey Foundation and a trustee of the JRY Trust. Mr. Harrington is a certified public accountant.

Lisa Harris Jones , Independent Trustee

Ms. Harris Jones has been an SNH trustee since 2015. Ms. Harris Jones is chair of the Board's Nominating and Governance Committee. Ms. Harris Jones is a member of the Maryland law firm Harris, Jones & Malone, which she founded in 2000, and today is one of the most successful female and minority owned professional firms in the United States. She has been active in numerous civic organizations, and in 2012 was the recipient of the YWCA Greater Baltimore Special Leadership Award.

Adam D. Portnoy , Managing Trustee

Mr. Portnoy has served as one of our Managing Trustees since 2007. Mr. Portnoy also serves on the Boards of The RMR Group, Hospitality Properties Trust, Select Income REIT, Government Properties Income Trust, and the RMR Funds. Prior to joining The RMR Group in 2003, Mr. Portnoy held various positions in the finance industry and public sector, including working as a banker at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and ABN AMRO, working in private equity at the International Finance Corporation (a member of The World Bank Group) and DLJ Banking Partners, as well as serving as Chief Executive Officer of a telecommunications company. Mr. Portnoy currently serves as the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and he is formerly a member of the Board of Trustees of Occidental College and the Board of Governors of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). Mr. Portnoy graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy from Occidental College in 1993. Mr. Portnoy is the son of Barry Portnoy.

Mr. Portnoy is a founder of SNH and has served as a Managing Trustee since 1999. Mr. Portnoy also serves on the Boards of The RMR Group, Hospitality Properties Trust, Government Properties Income Trust, Select Income REIT, the RMR Funds, Five Star Quality Care, Inc. and TravelCenters of America LLC. Prior to devoting his full time to RMR and its affiliated companies in 1997, Mr. Portnoy was a Partner and served as Chairman of the law firm of Sullivan & Worcester LLP. As a lawyer and businessman, Mr. Portnoy has structured, negotiated and documented over $20 billion of real estate transactions over a 30 year period.
